The “Royal Observer Corps” poster is an excellent example of a British homefront poster created during the Second World War to highlight the crucial work of civilian volunteers defending the nation’s skies. The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was responsible for visually spotting and identifying aircraft, providing vital intelligence to Britain’s air defence network during the early years of the war, especially throughout the Battle of Britain.
As one of the many WW2 war propaganda posters produced by the British government, this design helped promote the importance of observation posts and encouraged public respect and support for the volunteers who staffed them. Working day and night, members of the ROC reported aircraft movements that helped RAF Fighter Command track enemy bombers and fighters approaching Britain. Like many wartime war posters, it reinforced the idea that victory depended not only on soldiers and pilots but also on ordinary citizens contributing to the war effort.
Today, this historic poster British design stands as a reminder of the vital role played by the Royal Observer Corps in Britain’s air defence system during World War Two.
