A vivid and historically extraordinary example of late 16th century European ethnographic engraving art, reproduced to capture the detailed observation of this Theodore de Bry engraving of a Pictish warrior. This glossy printed vintage fine art print — engraved by Theodore de Bry after original watercolours by John White, published in Thomas Hariot's A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1590) — depicts a tattooed ancient Pict warrior bearing a human head on a spear.

Engraved by Theodore de Bry (1528–1598) — the Flemish-born Frankfurt engraver and publisher whose extraordinary illustrated accounts of the New World were among the most influential publications of the Age of Exploration — this remarkable print was originally included in the 1590 edition of Thomas Hariot's Virginia report as an appendix showing ancient Pictish warriors of Britain, to demonstrate to European readers that their own ancestors had once been as "savage" as the Native Americans described in the text. The elaborate body tattoos, warrior pose, and landscape setting are depicted with the same ethnographic precision that de Bry applied to his American subjects, based on watercolours by John White, Governor of the Roanoke Colony.

Today, Theodore de Bry engravings are among the most important documents of 16th century European ethnographic and exploration history. This reproduction is ideal for historians, lovers of Renaissance exploration art, students of British pre-history and Pictish culture, or collectors of early modern European engraving. It makes a fascinatingly complex and historically rich display piece.

Printed with a glossy finish on durable 200 GSM paper, this reproduction captures the hand-coloured engraving detail of authentic 1590 Theodore de Bry Pictish warrior ethnographic print art.
