The “Volkstrum” poster refers to the Volkssturm, a national militia formed in Germany during the final phase of the Second World War in 1944. Ordered by Adolf Hitler, the Volkssturm was intended to mobilise all remaining able-bodied men between the ages of 16 and 60 who were not already serving in the armed forces. These units were organised to defend German cities and territory as Allied forces advanced toward Germany from both the east and west.
Like many WW2 war propaganda posters, this German poster was designed to encourage participation and promote the idea of total national resistance. The imagery and messaging emphasised duty, sacrifice, and loyalty, reflecting the desperate defensive measures adopted by the German leadership in the closing stages of the war. Posters like this played a role in motivating civilians to join the poster German Army and contribute to the last efforts of Germany’s wartime defence.
Today, this historic design remains one of the striking war posters associated with the final years of the conflict. It serves as a powerful example of how propaganda imagery was used during wartime and makes a fascinating addition for collectors of WW2 Posters and those interested in the visual history of the Second World War.
